Scyphoniscus waitatensis Chilton, 1901
Found along sea shores and in estuaries around high-water mark. New Zealand records are from Heathcote Estuary (Christchurch) (Chilton, 1901), Makara (Wellington), and Wenderholm (Auckland) (our data).
A small species (males 3.5 mm, females slightly larger at 4-4.5 mm). Dorsal surface with small tubercles arranged in rows.
Can be confused with Scyphoniscus magnus, which is much larger (up to 1 cm) and occurs in the subantarctic (Auckland and Campbell Islands).
